"I've debated this review for a couple months. I've dealt with Kim Schwartz's State Farm office for nearly 20 years, collectively with auto and life insurance coverages. This past May, there was a tornado nearby and my car was damaged by hail as I was sheltered in place for over an hour. I contacted the office first to inquire about the claim process. The second time, I was going to initiate the claim but had apprehension after speaking with an agent in the office. I was told (without an estimate, even) that the damage would likely exceed the car's value, at which point, I would be issued a check and would need to surrender my vehicle or buy it back. I contested this point, asserting that ownership shouldn't change hands because insurance would be providing the coverage I paid for. The agent told me "insurance isn't a savings plan." She's right - it's not a savings plan - for either of us. So why would an insurer have the right to take ownership of property they've been paid to insure? That's the entire point of full coverage. It's why I pay a higher premium monthly. I pay hoping I won't need it; they collect, also hoping I won't need it. I said, "If you go to a hospital for major medical, the insurance company doesn't confiscate and own your body after they pay the bill." The agent told me that they did, especially if you were an organ donor. To me, this was the most absurd logic. After getting past that, I asked about the process, at which point I was told the car would be totaled, I would pay the deductible, I would buy the car back, and be issued a salvage title. I asked if I could insure a car with a salvage title, she wasn't sure but said "most likely" (unless I had other claims prior - I don't). I informed the agent that I would call back at a later date (and if I didn't call back, I wouldn't be pursuing a claim). After this, I contacted the Department of Motor Vehicles (Imperial, MO) and was told that I would not be able to renew plates on a vehicle with a salvage title (that I would need to make repairs and be issued a "prior salvage title). After that, I contacted the Missouri Department of Insurance, who couldn't confirm if I could insure or plate a vehicle with a salvage title. It seems nobody knows. That agent told me that "insurance really isn't set up for the consumer." And that was perhaps the most honest thing I'd been told in this entire fiasco. I decided to let it go, continue paying monthly, and accept that my car has hail damage (I called it "character."). But the entire interaction has been frustrating, especially since my monthly coverage rate has increased about 20% in the past 1.5-2 years. Which brings me to this review: I wouldn't have posted this if my rate for insurance hadn't increased AGAIN. So we can't make the claim process easy, nobody can answer questions I have with certainty (instead I get some "the insurance owns you if you die" run around), I have a damaged vehicle that what they would pay won't repair, AND now we're going to charge more? I think this is bad business."
